Golfers and supporters came out in record numbers for the 6th Annual Salvation Army Barrhaven Golf Classic, presented by Minto. Despite some cooler weather and a little bit of rain, a wonderful day of golf was enjoyed by all and our hosts at the Stonebridge Golf Club did a tremendous job in helping us make the event a great success with over $4,000 raised.

This annual fundraiser supports community-based programs and services that give hope and inspire transformation, delivered by The Salvation Army in Barrhaven and surrounding communities. The programs and services that are being supported by this year’s event include:

  • Community Care Ministries, which provides support to seniors and college/university students,
  • Summer Youth Adventure Camp Scholarships for youth to attend the Jackson’s Point and Newport Adventure Camps,
  • Family Services programs including Counselling, Emergency Assistance, and Christmas hampers, and
  • Emergency and Disaster Support.

“We are so blessed to have the support of our community! At every hole, we saw smiles, laughter and everyone having a great time. The support that we received from our sponsors and supporters allows The Salvation Army to make a difference in the lives of so many,” said organizer, Glenn van Gulik.

Special guest, City Councillor Michael Qaqish, was a first-time golfer at the annual event. “It’s wonderful to celebrate a great cause, and to celebrate and support The Salvation Army,” said Councillor Qaqish. “That’s why you see a lot of people here, despite the rain, because everyone wants to support the great community work that The Salvation Army does right here in Barrhaven.”

“Most importantly for me today is to see so many sponsors and see so many supporters. I always say we have an army behind The Army, and that army is our supporters, it’s our stakeholders, and our volunteers,” shared Corps Officer and Pastor of The Salvation Army Barrhaven, Captain James Mercer. “Great fun! I laughed a lot today and lost a lot of balls!”

In addition to the Golf Classic itself, a number of Marshals from the Stonebridge Golf Club got together for an end-of-season tournament of their own, and made a donation to The Salvation Army Barrhaven in the amount of $825.00. “We’re so happy to support The Salvation Army! They’re my number one charity because I know the money gets used properly, “ remarked Don Commings, one of the Marshals for Stonebridge.

The Salvation Army Barrhaven would like to thank the major sponsors and partners of this year’s Golf Classic as well as all of it’s Silent Auction Supporters, including Minto, Signarama-Nepean, John van Noort State Farm Insurance, and Family Radio CHRI 99.1 FM.

“This has been a great day for The Salvation Army and a great day for Barrhaven. We’re going to be able to support the people of this community in bigger and better ways because of you.” concluded Glenn van Gulik. “We hope to see you all back again next year!”
