On an absolutely beautiful Saturday afternoon in the south-Ottawa community of Barrhaven, The Salvation Army was taking part in the 2015 Barrhaven Run for Roger’s House by supporting the event and its runners with a high-energy Water Station.
As over 450 runners approached the 2km mark of both the 5km and 10km runs, an army of cheering volunteers at The Salvation Army’s Water Station greeted them. Complete with its Barrhaven Brass Band playing fun and fast-paced music, The Salvation Army volunteers encouraged the runners and provided easy access to a cool drink of water as they continued on in the race.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better day to serve in our community, “ said Captain Chris Rideout, Corps Officer and Pastor of The Salvation Army Barrhaven Church. “Any opportunity to make an impact in our community and show the love of Jesus through action is an opportunity we’re going to take.”
Relevant Outreach is one of The Salvation Army Barrhaven’s eight core values, and calls for programs and structures that focus on the relevant questions and needs of our community. We are encouraged to use our gifts to serve the community with whom we have a personal relationship. Barrhaven is our home, and in Barrhaven we love to serve.
The Salvation Army congratulates all of the runners at this year’s Barrhaven Run for Roger’s House, on both their commitment to running and achieving personal bests, as well as their support for Roger’s House, an eight bed home that provides comprehensive pediatric respite and palliative care programs. The Salvation Army also congratulates the Organizing Committee of the Barrhaven Run on another successful year!
A special thank you also goes out to all of our volunteers, including three wonderful students from area high schools – Andrea, Jake and Evan.
About the Barrhaven Run
In 2008 a small group of Barrhaven business owners banded together to start a registered charitable organization called BarrhavenRun.ca. The purpose of BarrhavenRun.ca was to organize an annual charity running event in the community of Barrhaven. Roger’s House, a pediatric palliative care facility located on the grounds of CHEO, was selected as the charity of choice. The first annual Barrhaven Run for Roger’s House was held in June 2008. 100% of the event proceeds go to Roger’s House. Events include a 10k Run (timed), 5k Run (timed), 2.5k Family Run/Walk and a Tot Trot with Spartacat of the Ottawa Senators. The event has grown each year with competitive runners from around the country taking part. In the first 6 years $127,000 has been raised for Roger’s House.
